Love is Love is Love.

It’s been a long 3 months of summer and for once, I volunteered.

Yes, volunteered at Pink Dot 2017 which was rather interesting, really. I got to thank Facebook for it, really. A random sign-up as a volunteer via a survey on Facebook and I’m invited to a Whatsapp group for Pink Dot almost like a month later. I was feeling pretty doubtful at first but hey, what’s the worst that can happen. It’s always good to acquire….a gay best friend right.

The entire lineup of events went rather quickly over 2 consecutive weekends. Well, the introductory picnic wasn’t that bad. I mean… heck yeah you can count on me (out of like 20 over others) to bring the picnic mat right…? Seriously though no one else brought a mat in the group so there’s that. The food they brought were sweet. Like SWEET. cupcakes, etc etc. There was more food than people. I’m more interested in the bottle of vodka but it got stolen by another group…so there’s that. Otherwise, it was all cool.

Met a couple of interesting people. Someone questioned the only Malay guy in the group: “Why can’t Muslim dye their hair?”. He replied: “We believe we should not change what God has given us”. Fair enough. Dude beside me whispered: “But aren’t you born with foreskin?” I fuckin choked. Like. That’s true. That’s actually a legit question. LOL.

The actual Pink Dot Day was pretty chill as well. Being in the crowd control team, I had to instruct people to stand in line and whatnot. But there’s free food and drinks so I’m good. Saw a couple of gay couples and boy band material guys at the event and I have to say…they are seriously good looking. Like not your typical scrappy Singaporean boy look. Like Korean pop star material. Their skin is GLOWING. God damn why are they gay. Jk

One of the volunteers came up to me and told me she enjoyed volunteering at Pink Dot because everyone here is nice. Hold up. She’s actually right. Everyone here is damn nice. No one is grumpy, they queue patiently,  in fact they are more polite than usual Singaporeans I meet. So…wow. She’s right. I struck gold.

At the finale of the Pink Dot event, everyone was waving their pink torchlight, even those who are still queuing to get into the area. I spotted a gay couple waving their lights and right next to them is their pram with two dogs. Like how cute is that? I seriously melted. They are happy and that’s what matters. Tbh that’s a good life decision, dogs over kids. Always. Jk.

Jokes aside, they are right you know. Love is love. I don’t think the law should dictate who you are supposed to love or even which gender in this case. It doesn’t matter whether they are straight or gay, they are human, they made a choice, they chose to love someone who happens to be the same gender and that doesn’t make them any different because love is love. Keep an open mind I suppose, that’s my takeaway from Pink Dot 2017. It’s kinda sad that Singapore has yet to adopt an open mind when it comes to LGBT issues but I’d say they are making good progress.

All in all, was it tiring? Yes. Was it fulfilling? Absolutely. But I definitely made a couple of new friends and it’s a experience that I wouldn’t change a thing.
